Estes Saturn V Build Part 36 Tunnels

Here you can see the difference in height before and after sanding.
The half round on the left is the original, the right tunnel has been reduced in height to match the vacuform wrap.

I've yet to round out the top of the right tunnel.

The ends of the vacuform tunnels are not at a true 90 degree "cut". I did have to sand a slight angle on the dowel ends to fit.
It is subtle but it will get you a better joint between the two ends.

Mark each half dowel and and tube location as you fit them.
There may be small differences in length and end angle between two tunnels.

Here's a good example of a slip fit of the tunnel joints.

The fit was a combination of trimming the wrap "lip", lowering the height of the tunnel and sanding the tunnel end at a slight angle.

The rounded top of the tunnels will be sealed and sanded before gluing to the body tube.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 35 Tunnels

Don't cut the half dowels to length yet!
You'll be trimming to the length needed after getting them to right height.

The half round dowel tunnels won't butt up against the lip on the vacuform wraps. Enlarge the picture and you can see I cut off the lip up to the raised vacuform tunnel.

When set against the vacuform tunnel, the half dowel is slightly taller and wider.

The flat bottom of the half dowel was sanded down until it matched the height of the vacuformed wrap tunnel end.

While sanding, dowel height was checked in a caliper to be sure all the pieces were the same height.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 34 Trim Fairings

At the end of step 12, you "cut away the areas on the tube where shown."
Like before, a pencil line was drawn. It's easier to see the line you want to cut against the white plastic.

For consistency, a strip of paper was cut and taped to the inside of the tube as a height guideline.
This was moved to each of the four cut areas as needed.

In the picture you can see the cut wasn't perfect. The body tube and plastic wrap are thick.

The cut was evened up using a diamond file, then an emery board to keep the line straight.

Before too much sanding was done, the bottom inside edge of the tube got a coat of CA. This keeps the tube "fuzzies" down and gives you a stronger surface to smooth out.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 33 Glue Fairings and Fix

In step 12, you are to apply a reinforcing coating of liquid cement to the fin joints.
I was apprehensive about this, thinking it would leave melted plastic and glue trails.

It didn't! I would just recommend going light with the glue until you get a feel for how it flows from the cement bottle brush.

After brushing on the cement, everything was taped down to hold the joints.
After all that previous trimming and sanding, I really thought there would be a better fit on the back end! The flat plate (rear of the fairings) that butts up against the body tube end was warped from the pressure of the fairing side joints. While the four were close to being flush with the tube end, the plastic was too thin to give a gluing surface.

To get the flat ends flat, I had to cut a "relief" down and through the center of the fairing back. This flattened out the warped backs.

Still, there is no way to glue these two sides together.

Simple solution - cover them up!

I cut cardstock half disks and rubber cemented them to the backs of the fairings.

These were cut taller than needed and the inside edge was trimmed after gluing.

This actually worked better than I'd hoped. It covered up the back end and strengthened an otherwise weak point.
Who'll know the difference? - you and me!

Model Profile Dr. Zooch Freedom 7

This is the Dr. Zooch BT-50 version of the Mercury Redstone Freedom 7.

This smaller Redstone is around 13 1/2" tall. Currently, the blog header picture is the capsule and tower of the larger, BT-60 based Zooch Redstone.

This smaller tower has three vertical dowels on the outside. Thin stiff wire is is used for all the cross struts, like on the Saturn 1B tower kits.
The fins are two piece.

As I've mentioned before, these Zooch kits are favorites and a throwback to what rocket modeling was in the late 1960s through 1970s. That is - before ready-to-fly, plastic nose cones and laser cut parts.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 32 Fin Gluing

On the forums, there have been concerns about the strength of the fins and fairings. I wanted to make this joint stronger than just plastic cement on the thin vacuformed plastic.

I decided to glue just the fin root edge first with liquid plastic cement. The fairing is slipped over it to help positioning and keep it straight.

I held the fin and fairing in position while the root edge glue dried.

Now the fairing could be slipped off and the root edge reinforced. Using the fairing helped insure the fin is in the right place.
So far, this plastic cemented root edge is not strong.

I applied some 15 minute epoxy with a toothpick. It didn't take much to make a small fillet.

Wipe off the excess, but it doesn't have to be that clean. It'll be covered by the fairing. With the epoxy fillet, the fin joint is much stronger now.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 31 Fin Slots

It surprised me how accurate the fin slot mold lines were.
I purposely cut inside the lines making the fin slot smaller. I figured I'd trim to fit the width of the fins.
In the end, after fitting the fin, the slot was pretty much cut to the mold lines. You do have to check back and forth against the body tube while trimming the slot. The fin's root edge has to rest against the body tube while the sides of the fairing should touch the lower wrap all the way around.

Keep enlarging the length fin slot until the leading and trailing edges of the fin fit well in the slot.

I didn't want to tear the front of the slot, so a small rat tail diamond file rounded the tip. The fins are slightly rounded at the leading edge.

Here's the underside of the fairing and fin. While trimming to fit, I kept one fin with the same fairing throughout. There would be slight differences between fins and fairings, so don't get them mixed up. This fin and fairing were both marked "two".

LAUNCH! Schoolyard May 18, 2011

In Orlando, this time of the year, you've got to be up early to beat the wind. Since I didn't have to take my daughter into school this morning, I was at the schoolyard at 7:30 a.m.
Julio was there and flying his electric RC plane. Between flights, he pressed the launch button so I could get pictures.

Here's my well worn Odd'l Rockets PIPELINE. It spun well with an A8-3 in it's tail. You could see the spiral pattern in the smoke trail going up. I used a long streamer, but today I could have used the 12" parachute.
The shock cord will need replacing and there was a small dent in to body tube. All repairable, but I think it's time for a new Pipeline in the fleet. I think I have a few here somewhere.

I'm using up the last of the old MPC 1/2A3-5m engines in my Semroc THUNDERBEE. This is a perfect bird for them. I caught it before it could hit the ground and break a fin. Estimated altitude was 450'.

I finally flew my Semroc BATROK. It was painted to match the old Adam West Batman costume colors, complete with a yellow nose block "utility belt". It had a loud boost with a Quest A6-4 to approximately 400'.

This model hangs upside down during recovery, like a bat. Actually, it's to keep the pointed fins from tangling with the shroud lines at ejection.
At ejection, that rear line pulled off a fin! I followed it coming down and it had a clean break at the root edge. It's repairable.

Also Flown:
The FlisKits HEMV-4 with a MicroMaxx. I can't explain this one, for the first time in a dozen flights, it was unstable! It flipped end over end, blew the streamer and landed undamaged.
The Red River Rocketry LIL' RED FEZ with an A10-3t. This is a free download, made up as a giveaway for NARAM 52. You can get it HERE. Stable with a little coning at boost. While the A10-3t engine is not recommended, I build mine heavier from 110 lb. cardstock. It flew fine except for some staining after landing on wet grass. I'd better seal it up with a clear coat.
The CORKSCREW with an Estes A3-4t engine. High, straight boost and a corkscrew smoke trail. During recovery it falls almost horizontal, with the open end of the tail ring up so there's never any damage.

Julio is a great flier, well experienced with his RC plane. It went down over a fence in a backyard. He was looking for it when I had to pack up. Like I've mentioned before, this is a small but handy field.

Tidsoptimist

Men velade.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 30 Fairings

I didn't trim the sides of the fairings, the 1/16" border edge was sanded off.

220 grit sandpaper was wrapped around the open area of the BT-101 and the fairing was moved up and down over it.

Stay away from the back ledge of the fairing you formed in the last blog entry. It'll get caught and make a snapping sound if it goes over the rough sandpaper.

Here's what the edge will look like when you are getting close to sanding it off.
More of the fairing sides will still be sanded off before it'll fit into the recesses on the body wrap.

Continue sanding on the body tube. You'll have to constantly check it's fit on the rear wrap area.
When you are done, the sides of the fairing will have slight curve.
You can easily see it in the picture when to fairings are set on top of each other.

Don't try to sand this curve into the fairing sides, it'll pretty much happen on it's own when sanding against the body tube.

Again you will sand a little, check the fit. Sand some more, then check the fit. Do this over and over until you get a good edge match on all sides.
You'll have to sand enough of the front of the fairing so it'll slide on from the rear and the ledge (flat rear of the fairing) is flush with the rear of the BT-101 tube.

I'd recommend going back to the Centuri instructions to see the Fairing Trim Guide. The older instructions had you use this as a trimming template. You'll get a better fit sanding against the body tube. But seeing the guide will show you the shape you are working towards.
The Fairing Trim Guide is on page 47 of the Centuri instructions found HERE

Estes Saturn V Build Part 28A Nozzle Bulkhead

This isn't part of the Estes Saturn V build, but it's something you might like to add to the display nozzle assembly.

Raul (RoskoRacer) and RockItDad came across a carded model Saturn V model and posted the links on TRF.
You can add a paper print to the visible nozzle side of the bulkhead.
The entire carded Saturn V is here:
http://jleslie48.com/satv20/s-1cton.pdf
Go to page 10 for this bulkhead print.

This is from a 1/104th scale carded model of the Saturn V by Ton Noteboom.
The Estes kit is 1/100th scale model.
Even though it's from a slightly smaller scale, this carded print fits the nozzle glue hole positions perfectly! Print at full size and line up the black dots with the holes in the bulkhead. Glue it to the nozzle side of the bulkhead before gluing on the nozzles.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 29 Fairings

Cut the fairings off the vacuform sheet and leave 1/16" all the way around.
Before cutting off the bottom ledge, trace over the edge with a pencil. It's easier to see the line instead of just blindly cutting.

The cut was made just to the outside of the pencil line. Just like the fins, I'd rather cut wide then sand to the correct size.

This plastic is thin, make a few light passes with your knife.

As it turned out, my roll of masking tape was just about the right diameter to sand a smooth arc at the rear of the fairing.

That's 220 grit sandpaper forming the smooth arc.

Check the fit often against the open area of the BT-101 body tube.

Don't take off any height from the molding seams trying to get them too flat! Later, When gluing on the supply tube, I found the two top gluing nubs were different heights!

Estes Saturn V Build Part 27 Nozzles

To the left, here's the nozzles bells cut right off the plastic trees and dry fitted together.

On the right how they'll fit after cleaning up the edges.

Like all plastic parts, one side has alignment pins and the other alignment holes for the pins to fit in.

On the side without the pins, sand the edge flat on a sanding block.

There is usually some small molding "flash" that'll prevent the two sides from fitting together well.

Don't over sand, just a few passes on 220 grit will be enough.

On the side with the pins, set your block above and below the pins. Don't sand off the pins.
Once again, don't overdo it! Just sand enough to even up the glue joint surface.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 26 Tower

The side pieces took a little time to coax into position.
The fit was pretty good after running a sanding block over the sides.

After they were set and flush, CA on a toothpick tip glued everything into position.

The central support ring was too small a diameter to make contact with the inside tower sides.

I glued a strip of cardstock to the ring and wrapped until a slip fit was obtained.

After sanding with a block you can't tell the difference looking at the tower from the outside.

Mitt i all flyttröra :-).

Estes Saturn V Build Part 24 Tower Prep

Sorry there wasn't any blog entries this morning, Blogspot was down!
While you could visit the site, I couldn't post anything.

A few things are still messed up, hopefully it'll all come together soon.

After working with all the body wraps, I wanted a little vacuform break before working on the fin fairings. I skipped ahead to Step 13 to build the tower.

Take a look a the tower sides! Opening the bag this was the first thing I saw. You can clearly see one side is warped.
I set it under some heavy books overnight hoping it would take out some of the curve.
It didn't. We'll cover how to take out the bend in the next post.

Leave the small nozzles on the plastic tree for trimming.
There was flash along the round bottom and I couldn't see any way to hold onto them off the tree.

To glue these in place, you are going to need tweezers for placement.

Be ready, held in springy tweezers, these could fly across the room at any time!

Estes Saturn V Build Part 23 Gluing Wraps

Here's the tough one, the Interstage Wrapper.

All the S-II LOX Tunnels were taped in hopes the spray adhesive would hold them down.

From there, you draw tunnel alignment lines up from the Interstage Wrapper.
These should align with the Upper Second Stage Wrap.

I decided to start sticking that wrap down in the middle at the tunnel lines. The rest of the wrap was rolled around to the ends.

Apply the Lower Third Stage Wrap before finishing with the Body Wrap Reduction.

I was a little concerned when dry fitting the Reduction Wrap. I couldn't get a good fit around the bottom of the paper shroud. The fit of the top was fine, the bottom seemed a little wide.

Actually, the slight wide overhang is good. It should overlap the Upper Second Stage Wrap slightly.
If you sanded the bottom edge of the Reduction Wrap smooth and straight, you should have a great fit over the Upper Second Stage Wrap.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 25 Tower

To get that curve out of the tower side plastic, heat it in water.
Heat water in a pan until it just starts to boil.
You should practice with a scrap piece of plastic to check how pliable it'll be once heated.

Here I'm using a piece of scrap plastic from the tower tree.

Hold the plastic in the hot water with tweezers.
Take it out and immediately bend it to the new shape. Don't force the bend!
Use a light force to straighten it out and hold it in the new position until the plastic cools off completely. It should hold the new shape. If not, heat it and bend again.

Here's the bent piece next to the straight one after heating and re-forming.

The nozzles have already been glued in place.

I used a rolled piece of masking tape (sticky side out) to hold the circular base in place.

The tower sides stood straight up without too much coaxing. Just be sure the tops (actually now facing down and glued) are sitting all the way into the center of their positioning "Vs".

EBAY Auction Cox Starter Set

Here's another rare EBAY find.
This is the complete shrink wrapped Cox Model Rocket starter set.
It featured their RTF Honest John.

The Cox rockets were made from the same tough plastic as their control line airplanes.

The launcher looked a little "Apollo-ish". Much like the old Estes Electro-Launch, it had the batteries in the base.
The controller looked a little like the Centuri style of the time.

For me, the interesting element was the Cox igniters.
They remind me of a match head in a plastic holder. The head of the igniter "plugged" into the engine nozzle. There were no micro clips, the igniter holder was joined to the cable from the launcher base.

You can see that Cox igniter and many others on Wayne Hill's Rocketry Blog HERE
The entire 1972 Cox Catalog is on the Ninfinger site HERE

This starter set auction sold for $227.50 and $12.00 for shipping.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 22 Gluing Wraps

I had an old can of Elmer's Craft Bond spray adhesive, #E-428.
The can says "Extra Strength" and Permanent Bond.
I'd had good luck with it in the past so I tested it on some scrap vacuform plastic from the kit.
The test looked promising, the plastic didn't react or melt from the spray.

I started with the smallest third stage wrap, thinking that would be the easiest.
Reverse tape rolls held it down to a scrap piece of cardboard for spraying.

When spraying adhesive, you only want it on the back of the wrap.
It should go without saying - Spray from directly above, not from the sides.

The first third stage wrap went well, so I went back to the order of the directions and placed the other wraps from the bottom going up.

There is good reason for this, you are continually aligning the wraps while ascending up the tube.

This Craft Bond spray adhesive did give me a little play, I was able to re-position the wraps before it grabbed on too tight to remove them.

The inter tank wrap wouldn't properly align no matter how I tried. I wanted the tunnel "bumps" to be in line, but they weren't.

I finally decided to start sticking that wrap on from the back, not from the master alignment line. The wrap was stretched a little to pull it closer to the tunnel alignment lines.

Still it's a little off, but better than it would be otherwise.
