Estes Saturn V Build Part 69 'Chute Tie In

Tie a long length of shroud line string to the snap swivel. Connect the snap swivel to the U shaped hook.
Lay this string down the upper section and below the coupler.

Mark this point on the line below the coupler.

While holding the model like the first picture in Part 68, find a point where the shroud line should tie to the shock cord. Be sure the model is hanging with the tower up a little.
Give yourself a little "leeway" and tie this length to the shock cord and parachute.

The illustration in Step E of the instructions would require two thicknesses of the shock cord between the coupler and main body tube. It would be tough to pack and hard to eject!

This single shroud line seems a little weak, but should be okay.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 68 'Chute Tie In

I waited until the model was painted and decaled before tying on the parachutes.

The instructions have you permanently tie the parachute to the upper section in Step 22, before finishing. Even though you can disconnected the snap swivel and line, the shock cord and parachute would still be tied to the line loop on the end of the third stage.
That parachute would have gotten in the way with all the masking and painting going on.

The picture at the right shows how the upper section should hang from the 18" parachute. The tower is up, the coupler end would hit the ground first on recovery.

In Step 22, Part C, you cut a 13" long piece of shroud line. That is tied to the snap swivel and shock cord.
In the picture at the left, the distance from the hook to the end of the coupler is 13".

NOTE: To allow for knots, you should make this line a few inches longer. At the recommended 13", it won't be long enough.
The rubber shock cord connecting knot would end up between the coupler and main body tube.
With the line at just 13", you'd end up with a doubled shock cord between the coupler and body tube. It would be hard to slide the coupler into the lower half.

Pingsthelg

Estes Saturn V Build Part 67 Decals

There is a smaller, extra set of decals included with the kit. Apparently some decals were printed without the white backing.
Working from the top down, these are the last decals to be placed.

I'd recommend going back to the Centuri instructions again for the Fin Letter Decal Guide. This will make the decal placement more consistant.
It's on page 47 of the Centuri instructions found HERE
Because it'll get wet, I traced mine onto heavier cardstock.

Here's one of the lettered fin decals with the white backing.

Using the guide makes it much easier to set the decals in the correct position.

And finally, the small numbered decals.
A scrap strip of decal backing paper was used for a height guide.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 66 Decals

You are not given any measurements to set the American flag decals in place. It simply says: "Align with white of roll pattern."
I used the T.L.A.R. method (That Looks About Right) to figure out the placement height.
A strip of paper was wrapped around the tube to give the same horizontal alignment to all four flag decals.

Using a ruler, light pencil tick marks were made to help find the center between the white bands.

Here the flag decal is set, aligned between the pencil marks and the lower edge of the paper wrap.

The USA decals are centered in the white areas above the lowest wrap.
Below the "A" there is a pencil center mark.
I double checked the spacing above the "U" and below the "A" to be sure it was centered vertically.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 65 Decals

Take a look at the "I" in UNITED STATES.
It's off center!
When setting something up vertically, that "I" should be centered like the vertical line in the "T" below it.
I worked for years in a print shop on a photo type setting machine. After all those years setting type, this kind of thing drives me nuts!

I didn't notice it until the second vertical UNITED STATES decal was set down. I couldn't risk cutting and repositioning a dried decal for repositioning.
Making the correction is up to you on your build. I'm leaving this one be.

The tunnel is too close to the center line where the UNITED STATES decal should set. This one had to be set down a little to the left of center.

Looking at a real Saturn picture, the decal font is a little bold.
The font used used on the box model has the correct "weight". Notice the "I" is centered! These might be older decals used to make production model.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 64 Decals

Be careful with these!
One came off after I thought it was set down.
After a minute of looking, I found it folded over on my fingertip. I set it back into the water dish to get it to open up.

Notice every other raised decal area is smaller. Around the tube they go from square to rectangular, square to rectangular.

These "two square" decals flip positions. follow along with the decal placement instructions to be sure.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 63 Decals

Instead of bouncing around, I'd recommend start from the top and working your way down.

You'll have less chance of the decals shifting while they dry if you are working away from the ones already positioned.

Starting with the top, these are the smaller decals.
Use tweezers to help with the placement.
Overall, the decals are high quality.

TIP: While the instructions say to let the decals soak 15 - 30 seconds in warm water, I'd only let them soak for about 10 seconds. The first two decals I set in the water released off the backing at 15 seconds. It's not fun chasing around a small decal in a bowl of water!
Let each decal soak for 10 seconds. Pick it out with tweezers and set it (still on the backing paper) on a paper towel until you are ready to use it. Soak and place only one decal at a time.

The "United States" lettering is curved for the conical shape of the command module surface.
The two decals for the service module are also curved! The two body tube "United States" decal below shouldn't be set for a curved surface.

To the right is a real Saturn. The "UNITED STATES" isn't curved.
I know, a moot point.

Check the old Centuri Decals on page 27 HERE to see what I mean.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 62 Build Up Until Now

Time to take a breather before the decals and final assembly.

Before decals, I did have to go back, mask and re-spray the white section.
Lots of handling and it got dirty.
This is just another reason to think about painting it with gloss paint, then go back and hit it with a dull coat.

TIP - hit it with a dull coat if you really want it scale. Flat finish models, especially flat white, will get dirty through handling and launching.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 61 Fin/Fairing Mask

The last, lower end mask isn't quite as complicated as the last one.
Silver will be the last color.
It goes on both sides of he fins and the lower third of the fairings.

Once again, use the raised line molded into the fairing for the color separation there.

A thin strip of clear Scotch tape is set down the middle of the raised line. The silver goes to the rear of this mask.

The leading edge is rounded slightly where it meets the fairing. I used three pieces of Scotch tape to "round" it off.

The fin sides were masked down the root edge and everything else covered with masking tape and paper over the larger areas.

The silver was sprayed in multiple light coats followed by a final heavy coat.

The masks and tape were pulled up about 15 minutes after the final coat was sprayed.
The picture shows the end result.

TIP: Try not to handle any metallic sprayed finish. The oils from your skin will mar and tarnish the paint.

This model is actually finished, the blog entries are prepared ahead of time.
It up for auction on EBAY right now!

LAUNCH! Schoolyard June 6, 2011

I got to the schoolyard soccer field early this morning, at about 7:45 a.m. The winds were almost calm and there was a slight overcast sky.
I've got three MPC 1/2A3-5m engines left.
The THUNDERBEE flew to an estimated 450'.

This is my new build and once again there was a loose fin after hitting the short grass field. It's repairable.

My circa 1975 MPC NIKE PATRIOT was "sky lobbed" to under 200' on an A8-3. This is definitely a B6-4 bird on this field.

Just the same, a successful flight and it was nice to see the old MPC parachute deploy. It was built stock but the old shroud line tabs were replaced with new ones.
You can read my history on the model HERE
The Sky High Hobbies link to the MPC kits is now dead!

Here's an old favorite, the Semroc POINT!
(Build it, watch it fly and wonder why? - the old Centuri slogan.)
I've had limited success with the advertised recovery on this one. Today on a B6-2 it reached 250 feet.

The engine should eject and hang from the short shock cord beneath the "rigid 'chute" conical body. This time it worked better, but it didn't fall vertically. Weird smoke trail? . . . this morning not so much.

To the left is how Centuri said it should fall.
Mine falls like the picture on the right.

Not a big deal, no damage at recovery.

Also flown:
The Quest Powered FLICS Shuttle with an A10-3t engine. A bent fin means another Scotch tape repair.
The FlisKits INTERLOPER with a MicroMaxx engine. Straight up with little drift on the small streamer.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 60 Service Module Wrap

After laying down the wrap, I noticed a difference from the Centuri instructions:

The Centuri RCS nozzle locations are not the same as marked from the Estes RCS marking guide. This is not a big concern there isn't any location "Xs" printed on the Monokote wrap I made.

The two holes that are covered by the wrap are easily seen through the trim material.
Simply punch the hole to open them up again.

I cut the nozzles from the plastic tree and touched up the black paint.

The nozzle piece rear pin is pressed into the holes. Glue was applied from inside the tube.

I'm happy with the finished look.

Estes Saturn V Build Part 59 Service Module Wrap

I had to take a break from the masking!
Since the upper section of the Saturn is painted, I wanted to add silver areas of the service module.

NOTE: In the Estes instructions, Step 23 Part D, you are told to cut out the masking guide for the Service Module. There is no masking guide in the kit box or on the parts listing.

As discussed in the Part 40 blog entry, I was going to make a Monokote trim wrap like the old Centuri kit used. This would be easier than trying to mask the top of the L.E.M. reduction shroud and give much more detail to the service module on the finished model.

I wanted to check the print width of the PDF print of the Centuri wrap. A strip of paper was wrapped around the tube and marked at the overlap. When layed down on the PDF it was correct.

After studying pictures of the real Saturn V, this area was not an overly shiny chrome, but more a "buffed" silver. I chose some Aluminum Monokote trim. It had a closer tint and wasn't as reflective.

My PDF print was taped over the Monokote and cut with a sharp knife and straightedge.

I had to go back and forth trying to anticipate the cut height for the parachute hook. I wanted the trim to go around and under the wire covering up as much of the white paint as possible.
Before wrapping, be sure the tube is clean! Anything on the surface will show through the thin trim material.
Be careful handling the wrap, those sharp inside corners can easily tear.

At first I cut out a small square for the top, but didn't take into account the lower end of the wire. It was wrapped as best as I could and in the end trimmed around the base of the lower end of the wire.

DIY Launch Controller

Did you ever want to build your own?
After getting off the ground with my camera tripod launcher and Adeptor HERE
I thought it'd be interesting to make my own (more professional look and feel) launch controller.

From the simple (plastic housing) -
http://home.earthlink.net/~rbogerjr/

To the more complex (metal housing) -http://www.robotroom.com/Model-Rocket-Launch-Controller.html
This one is a great piece of work!

Estes Saturn V Build Part 58 Cleaning Up The Mask

One tool used to clean off over spray is this cheap, white eraser.

Beneath the end of the eraser is a little over spray on the back of the fairing. Before shot:

The same fairing - After shot:

The eraser friction will remove a lot of over spray without scraping.
Use an eraser only after the paint is dry!
Use only a white eraser for this. A pink pencil eraser will leave pink streaks.

To the side of the lower launch lug I had some black paint lift and tear. I have to fill this white area.

Another favorite tool, my fine point black Sharpie.
This is used for outlining and establishing a thin frame for the touch up paint to follow.

I'm using the standoff as a guide and simply running the pen down the joint.

You do have to be careful when painting over the sharpie pen. Some paints could dissolve or lift the line. It does make the fill color easier to apply very close to the border line.

This is one side of the lower mask after erasing, drawing black lines and a little scraping. I'm not done touching it up yet.

Enlarge the picture to see some improvement.

For the white/black colors, I used Rustoleum Painter's Touch 2X Coverage spray.
For for touch-ups, this paint covers and blends very well.
I'll spray a little white (in the cap from the spray can) and brush on white from the other side of the black mask lines.
After the white, I might have to go back and touch up more black.

Studentexamen
