Semroc IRIS Build Part 1 Parts

Here's all the parts from another of the Semroc Deci-Scale kits, the IRIS.
I hope to show an alternative way to paint the black/white separations down the body tube.

Some of the more interesting parts:

That is one long, beautiful nose cone, 8" in length!
In the center of the the centering rings, are the square fin mounts.
On the far right are the "stepped" body bands.
The black decals will go over the long black areas down the body.

ASP Micro Wac Corporal FINISHED!

Did you ever have a kit where you've said to yourself: Stick a fork in it, it's done!

This is really a great little kit, well designed by ASP.
I just had too many painting problems, none of which reflect back to the vendor.
I could go back into it and clean up the root edge masks, but I really want to move on to the next project.

Lesson learned: Stay away from placing masking tape over silver paint!

The first Wac Corporal launch report is HERE

Robert o jag

Hittade recept på snabbt matbröd i LT häromdagen. Lätt som en plätt att baka.

1 l Filmjölk
8 dl Vetemjöl
7-8 dl Grahamsmjöl
7-8 dl Rågmjöl
6 tsk Bikarbonat
4 dl Sirap
2 tsk Salt
Rör ihop alla ingredienser.
Häll upp i en smord och bröad långpanna.
Grädda i 150 grader i ca 40 minuter.

ASP Micro Wac Corporal Build Part 12 Decals

The supplied decals were well thought out.

The decals were a favorite part of the build and really add to the final detail.

With the upper decal against the nose cone seam, it sets the lower stripe at the correct distance from the top.
These decals were set in water for over 20 seconds before they slid off their backing.

The lower decal works the same way. The thinner lower band is set over your masked black separation line. The thin band also cleans and squares up any bad mask.
Very smart!

Tying it all together:
The Kevlar is put in the drilled hole at the top of the clear tube and knotted. The knot is inside the clear tube.
The Kevlar line lays in the groove cut into the outside of the clear tube.
The Mylar streamer is taped to the Kevlar line.
Two pieces of Mylar are in the kit. The second is an extra, Mylar can melt easily at ejection.

Dialogue at the hairdresser’s

Oh, wait a second, I’ll get the book.
Why?
To read.
(pause) Why?
Its a true story. Actually, after the 2-nd “Why?” I gave up and suppressing a smile started to read. After another pause the girl said: I’ve just never seen it before. Do you think she was exaggerating? What do you think of it?

LAUNCH! Orlando R.O.C.K Monthly, July 2, 2011

It was great to fly with the Orlando group again. Brian and Tom always run a well organized launch. All nine pads work flawlessly. We had 23 flyers today. Lots of families, lots of flights.

Flying with us today was Brent York. Brent started Rouge Aerospace.
When you have the chance, check out his designs on RocketReviews.com HERE
He's holding the original prototype for his tube finned HEX COURIER.

We had a Spot Landing Contest today sponsored by "Shoot for the Stars."
ALPHA kits (with the balsa fins) were available to be built on site and flown with A8-3 engines.
Here's Jose Morales tying up the parachute and shock cord.
Veronica had the closest flight at 17 inches from the target!

One of my favorite designers is Ken Cooper. He always brings a new design with stellar workmanship.
Ken is holding his TRIPOWER rocket. It flys with three D12s. Today, only one D ignited and it got hung up on the launcher. I know he'll be back to try it again.

This is my Dr. Zooch ARES 1 STICK flown today with an Estes B6-4. Big altitude and recovery under an 8" garbage bag parachute.

Here's the members of the Riley and Osborn Rocket Club. The whole family wore custom matching shirts made by Mom. That's Osborn and Riley in front.

Carl Campbell from DFR Technologies flew the DELTA II. This is the same one I built for him on the blog, see the build HERE.
This was the first flight for this build and I was a little nervous. With a C6-5 it had a great, straight boost. But, at recovery, the screw eye pulled out of the balsa adapter! We found everything and it's still in "just finished" condition. I checked the screw eye, it had been screwed in with epoxy. The threads on the screw eye had balsa glued to it.

My Centuri GROOVE TUBE clone flew twice, with A8-3 and B6-4 engines. Great flights with a "Hillbilly Hat" reefed parachute.

Also flown: (by me)
PIGASUS with a Estes B6-4 engine. Straight boost. This is a favorite with all the wives and kids.

The Stellar Dimensions XANADUNE with a Estes B6-4. I ended up friction fitting the engine when I couldn't find the engine lock ring. I stuffed small pieces of wadding into the square body sides around the engine to prevent blow-by of the ejection charge. To no avail, the engine blew out the back and just the nose cone separated. It fell tethered together by the shock cord and landed without damage.

My best flight of the day was the Semroc POINT with a 35 year old Estes C6-3. It worked just as it should. Rigid chute recovery.

ASP Micro WAC CORPORAL with TINY TIM BOOSTER. I had some trouble today trying to get ignition using recycled igniters. Our section president Brian Coyle offerred up a new MMX igniter and we had ignition. At ejection, the booster separated. The knot in the Kevlar wasn't big enough and it slipped through the clear tube hole. All repairable and will fly again.

ASP Micro Wac Corporal Build Part 11 Tiny Tim Detail

The instructions recommend white glue to set the thin black supports in place.
I used white glue for positioning only. Any white glue on the clear surface could easily be picked off with a toothpick afterwards.

In the picture I'm looking down the tube to be sure the black piece is in line with the fins.

Any white glue overflow was taken off the clear tube.

A drop of CA was set on some scrap paper.
Using a toothpick tip, a small amount was transferred just to the top of the black support piece where it contacts the clear tube.
Another small amount of CA was set on the lower end of the support where it met the top of the body tube.

I didn't run CA down the clear tube! Any glue on a clear surface will fog up the plastic. I only wanted to get a little glue on the ends, hoping it would run down the support and glue it more securely.

Making Nose Cones from a Body Tube

Here's a link from a rocketry forum, one of the better D.I.Y. YouTube rocketry videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-rfazz1Z3c

This is a interesting technique on how to make a nose cone from the end of a body tube. It's very well explained by RocketmanBKK from Thailand.

I tried to make a body tube into a nose cone years ago but didn't get the results that he did!

ASP Micro Wac Corporal Build Part 10 Tiny Tim Booster

The other end of the clear tube is glued 3/4" in the lower Tiny Tim booster.
I placed a wrap of tape at the 3/4" mark for a "stop".

Some medium thickness CA was set in the booster tube and the clear tube slid in place up to the tape wrap. The tape was removed.

Three 1/2" lengths of thinner half round are cut.
The instructions say to set them on double sided tape and spray them black.
I took the easy way out and used a permanent marker to color them.

Before Wadding There Was . . .

I'm not a big fan of Estes Wadding. When packed correctly, it does work well.
I just don't like paying $4.99 retail for treated toilet paper.
So, I make my own from cheap crepe paper. See HERE

In 1954, Orville Carlisle devised a Parachute Wrapper. Note the paper cap on the bottom. This is from the instructions of the old Bal-Rock series.
Enlarge and check out Step 10, the nose cone is called the "Warhead!"

In 1958, Model Missiles had a variation on this. It was made from a single piece of (flame resistant?) paper without the cap on the lower end.
This illustration is from www.oldrocketplans.com

From the 1960 Estes Catalog, you are told a carefully packed piece of typing paper could protect your parachute.
This is from Ninfinger at: http://ninfinger.org/rockets/rockets.html
Click and enlarge the copy below:

Today I use a variation on the parachute protector.
In addition to packing my homemade crepe paper wadding inside the tube, I'll take just one square of the expensive Estes wadding and wrap it around the bottom of the parachute or streamer. It's just extra insurance especially when using a Mylar chute or streamer.

ASP Micro Wac Corporal Build Part 9 Paint and Kevlar

Did you ever have one of those builds where the paint just won't cooperate?
After the problem with the silver fins:
I wanted to lightly sand a few small raised spray bumps on the tunnel.
I used some cheap Harbor Freight 500 grit sandpaper.
It discolored the tunnel a gray color!

The Tiny Tim booster was painted without problems.
The entire lower section is simply painted black.

The Kevlar will be tied to the clear plastic tube.
A small hole is drilled using the tip of your hobby knife.
The knot goes on the inside, so a slot is made to run the Kevlar forward on the outside of the tube.
I started a "V" notch with my knife, the deepened and rounded it with a diamond file. I made sure the notch was deep enough by setting the Kevlar in the slot.

ASP Micro Wac Corporal Build Part 8 Paint - Oops!

When spraying, I'll apply light colors first, masking, then spray the darker colors.
Three colors are used, yellow black and silver.
My plan was to use gray primer and sand.
Then white primer and very light sanding.
On the upper Wac section, yellow was sprayed overall. In the first picture, I've masked for the silver fins.

I should have masked for the black areas and followed with the silver last.

The silver looked okay before I put tape over the fins to mask them out for the final black.

This picture was taken after the tape was removed off the silver fins. The sticky side of the tape had ruined the smooth silver surface. I would have gotten better results with a brush!

Even though I gave the silver adequate drying time, the tape still ruined the painted surface. Silver paint is always iffy.

TIP: Avoid using masking tapes on silver paint!
Note to self: Try to make silver the last color you lay down.

I had to sand the fins smooth and mask over the black this time.
The fins look terrible in this picture, you can see silver, yellow and primer when all was sanded down. They are actually smoother than they look!

Case in point:
I was looking over the instructions for the Quest AS-1 Escort kit.
In Step 26, you are told to first spray the rear of the model black, concentrating on the tail and rudder fins. The tail and rudder fins are black on the face card picture.
In Step 27 you mask off the black tail and rudders and spray the rest of the model silver!
Normally, you'd think the black (or darkest color) would go on last. Not so here! Quest doesn't explain the reasons why (you should spray silver over the black) but it's obviously to avoid using masking tape on silver paint.

George Gassaway's Seam Filling Technique Applied

Oh boy - another Saturn V!
Actually, I'm building two Apogee Saturn Vs for a customer.
In quality and size, this Saturn is a big step up from the Estes kit.

Recently, I've been using the seam filling technique suggested by George Gassaway where you direct the primer/filler into a narrow strip directly on the recessed seam. You can read about the technique HERE.
When I tried this technique before, I used Carpenter's Wood Filler and sanded smooth. I then masked, as shown below, and used a spray primer. This time I'm using just the spray primer.

The seams on the Apogee Saturn V tubes were a little wider than normal but not deep enough to hold the Carpenter's Wood Filler. The CWF would chip and fall out of the seam when sanding.
This would be the perfect test model for George's method.
This is a big model, over five feet tall and 5.66" in diameter. Normally it would take a lot of primer and sanding.

I masked off 1/16" to the side of the seams with masking tape. In between the masking tape, long paper strips were taped down.

I've been using Dupli-Coat automotive filler primer after reading a recommendation on TRF. It's got one of those fancy nozzles. You can turn the tip for a wide spray or a thinner line. I turned the nozzle tip 90 degrees for the thin line spray. This way I could direct the spray right at the seams.

It was sprayed on two coats, fairly thick. I didn't sand it down between coats. I wanted to build up the primer before sanding. I didn't want to take the time to spray, remove the tape, sand then reapply another mask to spray again.

After the two thick coats, here's what it looked like once the entire mask was removed. You can really feel the raised primer "stepped" over seam.

Here's the tube area after sanding.
It took much less primer, sandpaper and time to get the seam filled by not spraying primer over the entire surface.
One of the purposes of the primer is to show imperfections such as glue and rough spots. These can be then cleaned up before the final color coats. Primer seals the surface and gives the final colors a better grab on the surface.
Granted, I'll spray a lighter coat of primer overall before the white base.

LAUNCH! Schoolyard, June 28, 2011

Central Florida had big rain yesterday, the skies were still overcast. My launcher was set up by 8:00 a.m. before the winds came up.

Here's my carded downscale A-20 DEMON launched with an Estes A3-4t engine. Free plans are available, check the "Free PDF Plans" tab on the blog.
This one gets great altitude with a BT-20 based body. I would guess the altitude was around 400' with streamer recovery.

The Eric Truax carded SCAMP flew to 250' with an Estes A8-3 engine. The overcast sky made the engine flame look big. It recovered under a homemade 12" diameter garbage bag parachute.

This is a favorite in the fleet, bigger than most carded models. It's a full size BT-50 sized rocket. Enlarge the picture and you can see the nose cone is rolled in stepped segments.

My big launch of the day (for this small field anyway) was my Semroc CENTURION with an Estes B6-4.
In this small field, a B engine in a BT-20 based rocket would probably be lost. But, in this bigger demo bird it seems to be a good match. Altitude was 325'.

While the kit is supplied with two 12" parachutes, one was removed to keep drift to a minimum.

Also flown:
The FlisKits MMX HONEST JOHN with a Quest MicroMaxx engine. Clean straight flight with streamer recovery.
The 13mm Odd'l Rockets UP! CUP with an Estes A10-3t engine. A noisy wiggler with aerobrake recovery.

TRF Forum Bully?

Before I go on, I should clarify something about the building techniques I use.
Here's a condensed version of what I wrote in the first blog post, almost one year ago:

"Everyone has their own "proven" ways to build rockets. This blog is not to say I know all the right techniques. It's what works for me, but I'm always open for a better way to get it done. Who knows? Someone might pick up a new technique or be inspired to improve on what's written here."

Before the Internet, most developed building techniques on their own through trial and error. We'd pick up a tip here and there, usually from the yellow pages (technical section of the Estes catalog) or the Model Rocket News.

If you'd like to see a lively discussion, go to The Rocketry Forum. Scroll down to the "Techniques" section and read the posts under "Water Decal Solutions."

This isn't the first time Mr. McCoy has gone out of his way to tell me I'm wrong.
I heard about it when I painted my Fliskits MMX Honest John like my old Estes HoJo scheme.
I wasn't trying to build a true scale model, just a tribute to the Estes Honest John, the way their instructions and decal sheet showed.

When I scratch built MicroMaxx motor mounts from card stock I was told they were too heavy and I should be buying commercially made mounts.
That small amount of extra weight wouldn't matter anyway, every cardboard and balsa MicroMaxx I've flown has ejected before reaching apogee.

Once he implied I wasn't being professional.
I corrected him saying: "I IS a professional." I actually make some (okay, a little) money making model rockets.

Yesterday, Mr. McCoy jumped on me for adding a small drop of dish detergent to a water bowl for soaking decals.
I've done it this way since getting back into the hobby. No problems, no lifted decals. Heck, I don't clear coat or use Future over decals.
To quote Mr. McCoy: "It's the BETTER end results that will be obtained by NOT doing something frankly stupid that needs to be encouraged."
So now I'm stupid?

I don't get it. A forum bully?
Mr. McCoy, lighten up. It's a hobby, for Pete's sake.
