Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 11 Details and Filling

This is all fourteen wrap trim pieces cut and shaped. These are not glued on yet.

I'll seal all with varnish, two coats sanding between coats.



All the parts needing filling are shown on the right.
Seven nose cones, three fins, three standoffs, four body tube seams and a launch lug.
The three BT-3 tank tubes are stacked on a dowel to have thinned CWF brushed on.
The launch lug is on two toothpicks for a brushing handle.

A couple more half rounds were needed on the lower wrap.






The front was marked and sanded at the correct (or close) angle.

The bottom is marked for cutting.
I'll usually cut a little long and sand it to the right length.

Dottern 20 år. Mobilbloggar

Idag firade vi dotterns 20 årsdag. Äldste sonen o barnbarnen kom. Sen överraskade brorsan o hans goa familj oss med att komma hit. Två tårtor o långpannekaka bakade jag i går. Det behövs i en stor familj :-).

Min dator är ur led o stänger ner hela tiden och ibland kommer det upp blå skärm. Nu testar jag att ominstallera. Väldans tålamodsprövande för en som knappt kan stava det. Håll tummar o tår att jag fixar det. Det är första gången jag gör det.

Återkommer till  era bloggar när och om jag kan fixa till min dator.

LAUNCH! Soccer Field September 10, 2011

Today was the first cool morning in a long time.
High scattered clouds and no wind!


First in the air was the Hot Rod Rockets BELL BOTTOM with an Estes A3-4t. Straight boost and no drift under the metalized streamer. Estimated altitude was 425 feet.






The Truax carded SCAMP was launched with a 13mm A10-3t engine friction fitted in a 18mm engine casing. Apogee was at 250 feet with 12" garbage bag parachute for recovery.






A B6-4 is about as big an engine as I can go in this field. The Quest NIKE SMOKE is perfect match.

This rocket never fails, with a strong plastic fin can and thick metric tubing it'll be around for years. Highly recommended. I would guess the altitude was 375 feet.




This is not the Estes Pop Fly rocket.
It's my own version called the BATTER UP! using a bat and ball from the Dollar Tree store.
The fins are prints of baseball cards sandwiched over 1/16" thick balsa.

After reading reviews on RocketReviews.com, some fliers couldn't see the baseball after ejection. I added a streamer to the ball. With a B6-2, ejection was right as the rocket was turning over at about 250 feet.

Although I didn't catch the ball at recovery, everything else worked as planned. Except the parachute didn't fully open.
I haven't seen this before, the parachute blew right through the middle of a wadding square! It held the chute closed by reefing the shroud lines.

The FlisKits INTERLOPER with a MicroMaxx engine. High and fast with streamer recovery.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 9 Wrap Details

These little nozzles were the hardest to make.
The front end of a toothpick was cut and sanded at an angle.
I guessed at the pencil mark for the next cut.





After getting a good shape on the first nozzle, the angles were drawn on card stock and three more toothpicks were cut using it as a template.






Here's the nozzles set dry on the decal wrap.
Cut with this angle on the root edge, they stand up on their own.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 8 Wrap Details

On the lower wrap is a two piece detail.
The lower piece was a thinned down Popsicle stick. The upper round is a toothpick with the bottom sanded flat.





After gluing the toothpick with CA, the front angle was made with 220 grit on a block.







I matched the angle of the cut against the angle in the wrap picture.
The front was rounded using a sanding block.







The second on the right is ready for rounding.
As before, the longer pieces are shaped then the back end is cut off to the length needed. It's just easier when you have more of the back end to hold onto.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 7 Wrap Details

First up are the half-rounds at the top of the upper wrap.
As is my usual practice, keep the dowels long while shaping the front, then cut the back to the correct length.

Here I'm sharpening the dowel tip chucked in a drill against a sanding block.






Sand off the back half of the dowel.








Cut to the length needed on the Semroc decal wrap.



TIP: Anytime you do small details like this, it's easier to make them from a harder dowel or basswood. Typically, rocket instructions have you make them out of balsa scraps.
The balsa is grainy and hard to fill smooth on pieces this small.
Dowels and basswood have no real grain and will finish smoother with just a couple coats of clear dope or varnish and light sanding.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 6 Wrap Details

Looking forward to Step 27:
"The original Orion had small parts attached to the wrap but were too small to provide with this kit at one-half scale. The yellow indicators on the wrap can be covered with small detail parts of your own design, if desired, or left as printed details."

The original Centuri Orion vacuform wrap didn't have "details" attached to the wrap but were molded into the vacuform.
Actually, the Centuri Orion kit used vacuform wraps from their Saturn 1B kit. It was cut down from a larger 2.7" diameter ST-27 tube to fit the the Orion's 2.04 diameter ST-20 tube.

I found a scan of the Centuri 1B wraps.
It was loaded into my graphics software and reduced the print to the circumference of the ST-10 tube used in the Baby Orion. The 3.32" wide reduced wrap is a little larger than multiplying the 1.04" diameter by 3.14 or Pi.
The details layout on the Semroc wrap decal doesn't match the Centuri wrap, but it's close.
I wanted to make the small details closer to the Centuri vacuform shapes.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 5 Engine Mount

The lower centering ring was slipped over the top and down to the shroud.

The upper centering ring was hard to get over the Kevlar knot.
I had to make the notch bigger and set it over at an angle.


Glue fillets were applied to both sides of the centering rings.

With a wrap of electrical tape the mount was finished.





Here's a dry fit of the engine mount in the ST-10 main airframe tube.
It was a pain to add a nozzle this small, but in the end the finished look was worth it.

Extremt kupongshoppande

Nu har jag en drös till med TV kanaler med Boxer Mix. Flera av dom är nya bekantskaper. Bla. TLC och där har jag ibland kollat ett program, Extreme Couponing,  där dom  är otroligt skickliga att handla med kuponger. Dom spar över 90 % av summan när dom storhandlar och då menar jag riktig storhandling med en drös av samma varor. Dom har som miniaffärer hemma med allt dom fyndat. Några är ändå generösa och skänker till härbärgen och andra behövande. Många timmar ägnar dom åt letande, klippande och sorterande av kuponger och väldigt organiserade är dom *ler*. 

Jag har aldrig hört talas om att sånt är möjligt i Sverige?

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 4 Engine Mount

With that nozzle in place, ther'll be very little room for movement of the engine hook end.
I cut off some of the bent end to make it easier to slide an engine in.





For now, the engine hook was taped in place for positioning.

The notched 5/20 ring was glued flush with the end of the engine mount tube.



The shroud was slid down from the top.
The shroud seam was positioned down one side of the engine hook.

After the shroud was in position and against the 5/20 ring, I realized I'd left off the Kevlar.
The end of the hook was raised with a wedge shaped dowel and the loop was set under the upper bend of the engine hook.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 3 Engine Mount

Here's two card stock shrouds after cutting out and forming on my hand with a dowel.
Notice the tabs have also been curled a bit.

After gluing closed, I'll use the best fitting shroud.




Here's all the parts needed for the engine mount.
(Not pictured is a BT-5 sized engine block I added later.)

I cut a notch out of a 5/20 centering ring for the engine hook movement. This ring will support and keep the wide end of the nozzle round.

The engine casing will help with positioning and support when gluing everything together.

Utmaning av gardenhouse

För ett tag sedan fick jag en utmaning av gardenhouse om en viktig person i mitt liv. Jag har funderat vem jag ska skriva om här. Det är många som har speciella platser i mitt hjärta och ni som känner till mig vet att familjen är otroligt speciell och värdefull för mig. Självklart är det så för dom flesta. För min del så var det olika omständigheter som gjorde att jag själv har skapat min familj, både som en liten "ersättning" för min uppväxt och för nutid och framtid. Lite krypiskt låter det kanske *ler*.
Men de som känner mig vet vad jag menar.

Den person som betyder mycket för mig är min bror. Jag längtade syskon i så många år och då menar jag en Otrolig längtan. När han äntligen var på väg och jag var 11 år då, så visste min lycka inga gränser. Sen  blev han nästan som mitt barn under hans uppväxt, av olika sorgliga orsaker. Genom åldersskillnaden så blev det ju inte "syskonskap" förräns han blev äldre och åren nästan kom i kapp oss. Speciellt sen  när han själv fick barn och familj så har vänskapen fått andra dimensioner. Han är även min trygghet och jag vet att han också värnar om mig och jag  kan vända mig till honom i stort och smått. Det har jag gjort  också och hans hjälp är aldrig långt bort om så skulle behövas, omän vi bor 10 mil ifrån varandra. Men man får inte "tulla på nåden" och utnyttja det . Så både han och jag är mycket självständiga personer. Påhittiga med lösningar för det mesta.

Så efter barnen så finns han speciellt i mitt hjärta. Min finaste bror.

Jag ska nog skicka den här utmaningen vidare. Men har lite svårt att välja ut några. Så jag ger den vidare till de som läser här.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 2 Engine Mount

First up in the instructions are sanding the laser cut fins.

Nothing out of the ordinary here, just be careful when rounding the tank standoffs. The balsa grain runs parallel to the short leading edge.
It'd be easy to break the balsa.

On this Baby Orion, there is no nozzle on the engine mount.
I decided to add one.
After making it I understand why Semroc left it off this smaller version.

I used the shroud generator on Payloadbay.com.
Enlarge the picture to see the measurements I used.

The first picture shows a dry fit of the engine mount as built in the instructions.
I knew the lower centering ring would have to be glued much higher on the mount for the shroud to work. Check the original Centuri Orion plans to see how the shroud fit on the 18mm mount.

The picture to the left shows the lower centering ring placement to accommodate the 7/8" high nozzle shroud.

Is this an exact downscale on the shroud? No, but it's close enough.

Semroc Baby Orion Build Part 1 Parts

I had built and flown the original, big Centuri Orion years back.
I was interested when Semroc brought back the full size Orion.
I was more interested when I saw this downsized version.

This one flys with 13mm T engines.

Here's the interesting parts:
The "tanks" are BT-3s. There are three tanks and six little nose cones.
The wrap decals are in the middle.
The dowels and popsicle stick will be used to make up all the raised details not on the wraps.

260 Space Booster Build Part 22 Clear Fin Can

I made up the clear fin can on a scrap piece of BT-60, off the model. I didn't want to take any chances of the clear dope marring up the model's finish.

The scrap BT-60 was marked for four fins, the pencil lines extended up the body tube.
The fluorescent light tube was scored in a straight line and cracked down it's length. It was wrapped around the scrap BT-60 and taped.




I found it easiest to apply the Aero Gloss clear dope down the root edge with a Q-Tip.
Double check before applying the dope to be sure you have the root edge.






After gluing all four fins, a fillet of clear dope was run down the root edge. Use a thin brush and keep the dope close to the root edge. It becomes clearer when it dries.





The dope glued edge joints feel fairly strong at first. A few days afterward, they feel brittle.
I have a feeling these fins will pop off on a hard landing, just like the fins on my original Thor Agena B did.
